Bayahibe tourist guide

It is one of the least known but most visited towns, here we will explain this paradox to you

Bayahibe is very visited because it is the starting point of the most famous excursion of the country: Saona Island. But on the contrary, very few tourists stay and spend a few days in Bayahibe.

In our opinion, it is a mistake not to spend a few days in this quiet town as it is probably the one that best integrates the Dominican atmosphere with the foreigners who live there.

And we can assure that it is one of the most beautiful places in the country to live. The cleanliness, the security and the tranquility always sprinkled of course, of the music and the animation of the cheerful culture of the Dominican Republic.

Bayahíbe was founded by a fisherman from Puerto Rico in the 21st century, and it is like an actor playing several roles in the same play:

  • In the morning it is a busy tourist spot, as it receives busloads of visitors arriving from resorts in the east and getting on boats to Saona Island.
  • When the rush hour passes, it regains its air of a sleepy village. With the return of the tourists, it undergoes another burst of activity, and then a new transformation after sunset.

What sets it apart from other sites is that it retains its character, despite the incessant tourist invasion, including the imminent opening of a large casino in the vicinity.

A short drive from Bayahibe is Dominicus, a beach that is home to several resorts.

Undoubtedly, you cannot miss the church of Our Lady of the Divine Shepherdess.

This beautiful church stands out for its wooden construction and its proximity to the sea.

Church of Our Lady of the Divine Shepherdess

This beautiful wooden church was consecrated on March 19, 1925 by Archbishop Noel. The building was completed by the Americans and financed by Bishop Noel himself with his own funds.

Inside the church is a painting of the Divina Pastora, patron saint of Bayahibe, which is carried every year in nautical processions along the town’s coast.

In 1954, a Franciscan friar who had heard about the festivities came from Brazil to attend. The monk brought a beautiful painting of the Virgin Mary as a gift. It was restored and hung in a prominent place; just above the altar of the church known today as the Priestess….
